Course 2 - Lutheranism 101
Taught by Kurt K. Hendel, the Bernard, Fischer, Westberg Distinguished Ministry Professor of Reformation History at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago
The course will explore central themes of the Lutheran theological tradition. Both Martin Luther’s writings and the Lutheran confessional documents included in the Book of Concord will be the chief sources for this exploration. Lectures will be presented. However, there will also be time for questions and discussion.
October 10th and 12th: The Doctrine of Justification
The content and significance of the very heart of the Lutheran theological heritage is the focus of the first session. The Lutheran understanding of human nature, of the free will, of law and gospel, of faith and of forensic justification are examined.

October 17th and 19th: Sacramental Theology: Baptism
After exploring the main contours of Lutheran sacramental theology, we will discuss the meaning and significance of baptism. The question of faith and baptism and the debate regarding infant vs. adult baptism will be addressed.

The Lutheran church’s Eucharistic theology and practice is the focus of this week’s session. The diverse theologies and practices within the Christian community will also be addressed.

October 31st and November 2nd: Faith Active in Love
Luther insisted that Christians live in Christ through faith and in the neighbor through love. The Reformer’s vision of the Christian life and of ethics is still a marvelous resource for Christians today as they strive to live faithfully. We will explore that vision.
